Lim Yue Han (Nanyang Junior College)

I joined EconsLab in early August 2020 as I was struggling with Economics for the past 1.5 years. Before tuition, I had difficulty scoring well in case studies and occasionally in essays because I could not apply the Economics knowledge from everything I learnt accurately. Even when I scored well at times, I did not know the reason why I did well for that specific question and after JC2 Block Test, I began to panic knowing that my concepts were all over the place.

Thankfully, Ms Foo from EconsLab gave me many important comments as well as constructive feedback when I joined her at the very last minute. She took time to review my exam scripts and time practices did in class. Everytime she returned the scripts to me, I could see red ink all over my essays containing so many important details about what was missing in my essays as well as the conceptual errors that I made when dealing with the essay question. All these feedback were crucial in my last minute revision as Prelims approached and I improved by a grade from C in Block Test to B in Prelims after the school moderated my scores to the A Level standard. Ms Foo then awarded me with Popular vouchers for scoring the highest in my tuition class, which further motivated me to perform even better as the A Level exams drew near.

A few weeks before my A Level Economics exam, Ms Foo prepared two extra lessons to provide me with important reminders about what I need to look out for when analyzing case studies and writing essays together with last minute revision about the doubts we have before we took the exam. A few hours before the A Level exam, Ms Foo consolidated all the important points one final time before her students stepped into the exam hall. By that time, I was so much more confident in dealing with case studies and more importantly essays. For the first time in two years, I wrote three full booklets for my A Level Economics essay exam, the longest I have ever written in an exam and this time, I had a clear direction on how to approach the essay questions, packing my essays with accurate economic analysis and clear diagrams. These led to me scoring an A grade for my A Level Economics exam, something I never dreamt of achieving a few months back.

I am genuinely grateful for the effort Ms Foo put in when she prepared her lessons and her patience when marking our scripts. Thank you Ms Foo!

Ms Foo taught me for just over 6 months, in which time, my grades in H2 Economics jumped from an E for my March Common Test to an A in the GCE A Levels.

Ms Foo is caring and diligent, often taking time out of her busy schedule to reply our queries on Whatsapp or mark assignments done during lessons, going the extra mile to make sure we are all prepared for our examinations. Her holiday crash courses also allows us to brush up on topics we are weaker at and refine our skills for our stronger topics. The small class size enables her to care for the needs of all students, often stopping to quiz us, ensuring we digest what is being taught during lessons.

The extra attention that Ms Foo pays us to guarantee we understand the topics is really what makes the difference, and is what makes her a truly great teacher!

Ms Foo’s years of experience in teaching Economics has helped me sail through JC Economics with ease. Not only did I managed to consistently get good grades for H2 Economics, I managed to get a 99 percentile in my cohort in several tests. Ms Foo helps the weaker part of you improve. When I struggled in getting good grades during JC2 for the essay component, Ms Foo’s advice and numerous amount of practice helped me work my way in securing good grades during my JC2 Prelims. Having an abundance of resources helped me have an edge over my peers and also have more enhanced knowledge with her own notes. Ms Foo’s notes are concise yet very enriching, complementing the usual school’s notes, deepening understanding in H2 Economics. With the recent change in syllabus content, Ms Foo’s vast knowledge helped me conquer the H2 Economics in A Level exam and secured an A grade for me. Her fast and efficient teaching has also allowed me to sleep in lectures and still cope with school work due to hectic JC life. An encouraging and dedicated tutor, Ms Foo’s strong records in helping students ace exams should make her one of the best Economics teacher around. Thank you Ms Foo!

As much as Ms Foo has been branded as a turnaround specialist with excellent track record, joining our tuition earlier definitely helps to relieve students of unnecessary stress and secure a higher chance of achieving greater improvement in their grades. Students who achieved at least 4-grades improvement (e.g. from S to B), 67% of them attended our tuition for at least 6 months whereas the remaining 23% attended tuition between 3 to 6 months.

Take a look at what some of our graduates from our 2021 cohort said about tuition at EconsLab:

“Ms Foo is an engaging teacher who is able to effectively teach us Economics concepts as well as how to attempt questions. “Ms Foo has been a great help in my journey for the A Levels. She is good at explaining concepts thoroughly and consistently reiterates ideas so that we that we can learn them by heart. She is extremely passionate about teaching and her classes are always so fulfilling. She explains everything in detail and is always willing to explain a concept repeatedly until you understand fully. She has an abundance of resources that students can use to improve. The practices she gives in class are complete and tackles the critical concepts and skills needed to excel. I would definitely recommend Ms Foo to anyone struggling in Economics.” ~ Marcus Tan, ACJC (2021)

“I joined Ms Foo just 3 months before A Levels and I really thank her for being such a insightful and patient teacher to me! She definitely knows how to make Economics engaging and fun.” ~ Ruth The, CJC (2021)

“Having joined Ms Foo just before prelims, she was my last hope to get my scores up and to iron out my misconceptions. Really appreciate Ms Foo’s very interactive teaching methods and how she wouldn’t leave anyone in class behind.” ~ Marilyn Goh, ASRJC (2021)

“I joined EconsLab only in the second year of JC after struggling with it in school, where I found it difficult to apply what I have learnt into answering exam questions. What stands out from Ms Foo’s lessons would be how in-depth she goes into analysing different practice questions, allowing us to much better understand questions requirements and Economics concepts, whereas tutorials in school tend to be much more fast-paced and less in depth. Ms Foo would also constantly encourage us to participate in class discussions where we would take turns to respond to different practice questions, honing our ability to think quickly during the exam. And Ms Foo would follow up by patiently guiding us to improve our answers as well as our understanding of the subject. Thank you so much Ms Foo for increasing my interest in Economics and helping me clinch an A in the A Levels!” ~ Jordan Tan, RI (2021)

Excellent Results For Our IB Students

Congratulations to our students who did well for Prelims (Year 6) and EOY exams (Year 5) scoring a perfect 7 for IB Economics!

Understanding of content forms the basic foundation for students to do well, followed by exam techniques such as question analysis and answer structure. Not forgetting Ms Foo’s constant reminder to her students to include “scope and depth” in their answers. Applying what is taught by Ms Foo is key to seeing improvement in students’ results, not forgetting students’ hard work in studying.

Besides detailed teaching of content and class discussions of questions for Paper 1, Paper 2 and Paper 3, timed practices are incorporated during lessons to track students’ progress through gauging their ability to answer the questions with accuracy within the stipulated time. Class participation plays an important part in enhancing students’ learning. Ms Foo also review her students’ school exams scripts (e.g. MYE and Prelims), providing constructive feedback on students’ answers so that they will be able to identify their weaknesses and work towards improving their grade. And true enough, our students’ excellent EOY results speaks for itself.

Excellent Results for JC1 Promotional Economics Exam (2021)

Our JC1 students completed their Promotional Exams in end September and lessons are temporarily suspended since then so that they can focus on their Project Work (PW) while we put our focus on preparing our JC2 students for the A Level exams. We are happy to receive some pleasant surprises from our JC1 students who did well in Economics in their Promotional Exam! Well done!

Special mention of some students who joined econsLAB for Economics tuition in mid July which is just 2.5 months before the Promotional Exam - managed to achieve a vast jump from U to B grade! Some students joined earlier in April and also managed to achieve a B grade otherwise C. Not forgetting a student who scored A grade and has been offered to take H3 Economics! Ms Foo is extremely happy for her students who showed such great improvement. It is to be noted that those students scoring Bs and Cs were previously failing the Economics with U grade prior to tuition at econsLAB with our Dean’s List star tutor Ms Foo.

Excellent Results for Prelims in JC Economics

It has been a while since the Prelims exam and our students are finally taking their A Level exams this upcoming week. It’s been a long preparation for our students. How well prepared are they for Economics exam?

We would like to share some Prelims results of some of our achievers where they demonstrated outstanding improvement to an A grade for Economics while some went on to achieved B or C grade. Do note that 90% of these students were either doing badly in the subject with either U, S or E grade but went on to overcome the challenges to achieve the results today. Well done to our students!

Some of our students have been failing the subject but also managed to pass for the very first time in Prelims. Well done in catching up and not be held back by their past performances!

Our Dean’s List star tutor Ms Foo has been reviewing students’ exam scripts for her students since end September on top of her busy teaching schedule where she teaches daily. As much as Ms Foo is overwhelmed by the volume of scripts she needs to review, that doesn’t stop Ms Foo from doing what has been regarded as her signature over the 16 years she has been teaching - putting down her comments against her students’ answers so that students know what went wrong with their answers: why can’t they use certain concepts for some questions, what went wrong with their expression when writing out their answers, what led to the wrong question analysis and hence off focused answers etc.

Ms Foo spends time giving comments to her students as she believes that the way to improve in the subject is by identifying what went wrong through their own mistakes. Afterall, each student is unique in terms of the mistakes they make and so need to pay more attention to particular areas of concern. And true enough, students who learnt from their mistakes after reviewing Ms Foo’s comments, applying the correct techniques and content taught during lessons, do see improvement in their grades. Our students’ results speaks much for itself.

From our students’ Prelims results, it is very clear that the past do not equate the future. Doing badly in the past does not mean that they will continue to do badly in the subject. Their Prelims results is indeed a much needed boost to their confidence before the long awaited A Level exams which they have been preparing for. We are confident that our students will stay consistent and do well for Economics in A Level exams.

Wishing our JC2 students the very best of luck for their A Levels exams! Ms Foo will continue to see her students to help prepare for the Economics exams. Yes, Ms Foo stays with her students to the very end.

Excellent Improvement: 3-Grades Jump With One Lesson

At EconsLab, we do our best to provide students with the skills necessary to conquer school assessments and eventually the Promotional exam and GCE A Level Economics exam.

We would like to share one of our students’ excellent improvement in Economics which we hope can motivate other students to believe that anything is possible. Afterall, the past do not equate the present.

This particular student attended our group tuition class, having just one lesson with our Dean’s list star tutor Ms Foo just prior to his school’s Common Test in less than a week. Due to time constraint, Ms Foo revised the key concepts for the main chapters tested along with some question practice to demonstrate how concepts are applied. Ms Foo also shared some tips on answering technique, improvising questions along the way to show how different keywords in questions require different answers although revolving the same concepts.

Ms Foo did the best she could within a short span of one lesson (1.5 hours for H1 Economics). The student is also very attentive, focused, asked questions and participated in question practice which enabled Ms Foo to assess his understanding of the concepts and application taught earlier.

Eventually, the result is fantastic - with the student scoring 10/20 which is a 3-grade jump from U to D!! It is important to note here that this student has been failing all tests prior to seeking help. With this student’s hard work, ability to absorb what was taught and applied accordingly in one lesson under Ms Foo’s guidance, what was impossible became possible. Ms Foo is very happy for her student’s vast improvement when he shared his results. Ms Foo’s advice to her student is to stay consistent and look forward to greater improvement in the next exam.

In another student’s case also taking H1 Economics, our student achieved a 5-grade jump from U to B. This student was consistently failing before seeking help from Ms Foo. Indeed, another inspiring story to encourage students that anything is possible.

Our JC Economics H1 and H2 classes are separated so that students can learn effectively what is required - afterall, H1 and H2 Economics have different syllabus and exam format. We do not group our students together for H1 and H2 Economics.

As much as Ms Foo applies the same teaching to all students, results may vary from student to student. Afterall, every student is unique in their own way. Ms Foo overcomes this issue by getting students to do timed practices during lessons to identify each student’s weaknesses and to eventually overcome them.

Looking to sign up for our H1 classes? There are still some slots available for JC1 and JC2 students. For JC1 students who are looking for H1 Economics tuition but cannot find a suitable class timing, please look out for 2022 registration for JC2 H1 Economics tuition. You may also drop Ms Foo a whatsapp/text message at 9723 5149 for enquires.

Besides JC H1 Economics, Ms Foo teaches JC H2 Economics as well as IB Economics (SL & HL). Classes are conducted daily by Ms Foo from Monday to Sunday.

Hope to see you soon.

Excellent results for MYE 2021

Despite the pandemic which caused centre-based tuition classes to cease from 18 May to 13 Jun 2021, lessons at EconsLab was not at all disrupted. Learning went online during this critical period where we continue to prepare our students for their Economics Midyear Exams.

We are happy that our students are not at all affected by the pandemic and went on to achieve fantastic results in Economics - ranging from 2 to 5-grade improvement in this MYE! Good effort put in by our students and we look forward to see even greater improvement in their results in the upcoming Prelims and Promotional exams.

Learning face-to-face and online makes no difference to our teaching - all classes are taught by our Dean’s List star tutor Ms Foo. Ms Foo is a full time tutor and armed with more than 16 years of teaching experience. Ms Foo has excellent track record in helping her students see good turnaround in their grades. Ms Foo is friendly and approachable so her students do not feel intimidated to ask her questions.

What is our track record? The release of 2021 GCE A Levels results showed that our students did well be it opting for face-to-face or online weekly tuition:

👍 Achievers with 5-6 grades improvement from U to As and Bs: 73%

👍 Achievers with 4 grades improvement from U to Cs: 27%

👍 Achievers with at least 3 grades improvement: 100%

Specifically, students who scored As, Bs and Cs are 41%, 32% and 23% respectively. Around 90% of our cohort scored either U or S grade prior to Economics tuition at EconsLab. You may know some of our achievers (refer to “Results” page).

Ms Foo helps her students review their tests and MYE scripts to help them identify area of weakness so that students understand what went wrong with their answers. It is okay to make mistakes but important not to repeat them in the next exams. Reviewing students’ scripts has always been a signature at EconsLab where Ms Foo patiently and meticulously uncover students’ weaknesses - afterall, not all student is the same and so weaknesses differ. We also incorporate timed practice during lessons to help students with time management and build up accuracy in points generation. Not forgetting Ms Foo’s famous lines “You need to have scope and depth in your answers.” and “It’s not about quantity but quality.”.

Do you need help in uncovering your weaknesses? Join our class soon to help you better prepare for the upcoming exams. Time is running out. We only have limited vacancies left. You may text/Whatsapp Ms Foo at 9723 5149.
